The focus of the present review is on secondary prevention of adverse child outcomes in children who have experienced maltreatment. Child-focused interventions predominantly aim to help children cope with adverse effects of maltreatment such as stress, anxiety, and low self-esteemand address their immediate and long term adjustment needs. With the principal aim of addressing children’s needs following maltreatment, interventions that are solely child-focused are not aimed at the parents and the family and are not designed to prevent recurrence of abuse. There has been little systematic evaluation of these approaches in the area of child physical abuse, despite some evidence that particular approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) may have some benefit in other forms of child maltreatment, such as child sexual abuse..DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD007838
